25-day Countdown Calendar Gift Guide

Christmas season is just around the corner! The advent calendar has always been a favored part of the holidays for me. There is something exciting about counting down the days until Christmas, and it’s nice to have a physical representation.

Advent Calendar Ideas

Advent calendars coms in all shapes, sizes, themes, and styles. They can be a true calendar with marking pens where you put an “X” on each day that passes until Christmas. There is also the child-crafted, construction paper chain-link that is opened each day. Once opened they usually have a hand-written scripture or nice message to brighten your holiday wait until Christmas Day. Or, the tasty chocolate-filled advent calendar, where each member of the family takes a turn on opening and then fights over the one single piece of chocolate.

I’ve decided to change the advent calendar up this year and offer another tradition, but I will get to that in a minute. Though there are many of you who still prefer a classic advent calendar, I have developed a gift-guide for advent calendar buying. These are geared for myriad personalities or for those of you who might enjoy a 24-day diversion from the quintessential chocolate advent calendar.

New Traditions

And now for a new tradition our family will be partaking in this year. My husband was interviewing a client for a film-piece he was creating. They were talking about Christmas traditions and this one was an absolute keeper! We have a lot of readers in this family and all three kids are very drawn to the idea of gathering around the fireplace and Christmas tree. This year as we countdown Christmas we will be unwrapping a holiday book each day to be read as a family in front of the fireplace, in our living room. There may even be some hot cocoa with whipped cream involved, but I absolutely loved hearing about this tradition and idea. The best part is that the books can actually be kept and recycled for the next year. The children will get to unwrap a gift each day which is always a JOY during the holidays. And, reading together is a fabulous family activity.

Whatever option you choose this year, I hope you find the right plan for your family as we all anticipate Christmas Day. And who knows, maybe you’ll start a new family tradition as well.
